Trading Post
The Digital Village

The Trading Post was envisaged to be a place for buying, sourcing and
selling unique, innovative and hard to find products and services from
around the world.

Commissioned by the Digital Village the site was planned to form the
ecommerce side of the h2g2 website.

h2g2.com is an interactive idea based on The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, the best-selling book by Douglas Adams (who was one of the original founders of the site). Written by its visitors - people like you - h2g2.com already has thousands of entries on all sorts of subjects. The result is a living, breathing 'Guide' that's constantly being updated and revised, driven forward by the very people who use it.

The Trading Post was not seen as being the direct source of products, but the source of information. Stories about the products formed the basis of the site. Initially there was a story about why the product was selected for the Trading Post and a story from the inventor how and why he created the product. In addition each product had a forum attached where buyers could report on the different uses they found for the product or how it performed etc.

Artificial Environments co-developed the concept of the Trading Post and produced a fully working prototype. User scenarios helped defining the structure and navigation and also lead to interface ideas like the passion indicator - a small pulsating 'light' which was attached to every product and changed the speed of pulsating according to the popularity of a of that product, ie. how much it was talked about in forums.

In addition to the visual design and branding for the Trading Post AE also consulted on the interface design and usability for the external payment solution.
