This Greenpeace-sponsored animated short about the dangers of plundering Arctic oil reserves was developed in time for the BP 2000 Annual General Meeting. It encourages BP's shareholders to vote against continued offshore drilling in Alaska and in favour of moving towards solar power. It is difficult to generate interest for an issue thousands of miles away and which, on the face of it, has no direct impact on the average UK inhabitant. However, Polar Bears Come To Town makes a serious argument about the future consequences of our indolence today, indicates that the problem (and its solution) are closer to home than one might think, and manages to appeal to a wide age range without stooping to condescension. The short feature follows two polar bears on a visit from Alaska to the UK in an effort to meet with shareholders face-to-face. They give ample amounts of related information and suggest how British citizens, even those not connected to or concerned with BP, can help. |
