How to shift the world's most acclaimed magazine on Graphic Design, so heavily rooted in print, into the digital realm? How to create a point of contact for existing readership, and channel new readers to the printed version of the magazine?

To solve these issues, AE worked closely with eye magazine to design a site that is a powerful reference tool for the design community as well as an example of innovative design in itself.

eye magazine celebrates style, visual communication, meaning, and design philosophy, dedicating its pages to making sense of the visual overload daily generated by the global design community.

The site provides essays by and about the stars of the design community, access to current and previous issues, and the latest conference and industry links. All articles are extensively cross-referenced, which makes it easy and intuitive to follow a particular name through the site as well as reading by issue, or browsing by concept. In addition users can purchase any back issue of eye magazine online, with teaser essays encouraging people to subscribe to the printed edition.
With the focus on strong content, usability was a key factor in development, we focused on creating playful high quality interface design, fulfilling key marketing requirements and ultimately providing a source of inspiration for the design community.

In addition to planning and site architecture, we were responsible for the visual design and technical implementation. The backbone of the site is a customized content management system allowing eye's editorial team to document back issues and add new content.

reaching new audiences
Eye magazine currently appeals to a small and select readership and an important part of the brief from Quantum was to use the net to reach a new audience of upcoming designers who are at home with new media, and appreciative both of innovative interface design and the powerful search engine which forms the core of the site.

future outlook
New sections are planned for the site, including a design directory, which will grow to become a key place for links to the creative industry from Design Associations and Font Libraries to paper suppliers.

Highlights
eye critique
Written by Rick Poynor around contemporary issues in design, the eye critique is exclusive to eyemagazine.com and is guaranteed to be a big pull to the site. As well as providing a strong editorial voice, the column will set the graphic tone for the home page, with backgrounds and colours changing monthly.

the concept index
The 'concept index', a feature that first appeared on the eye magazine '10 years' poster, has been translated online to become a playful tool for locating back issue content through the use of keywords, context and suggestion.
